Sports Day and Fun Lunch on Friday. There is an outdoor picnic lunch with families from 12:30pm - 1:05pm this Friday. Students need to return to their classrooms at 1:10 for attendance and will be dismissed at 1:20.

- practiced comparing and ordering fractions on a number line
- showed our understanding that the same fraction can be different depending on the size or amount of the object (AMA my Would You Rather?)
LA
- Ask me about our new writing project Mrs. Day shared with us called - What happened to your face?!
Social
- discussed the changes that occurred due to the arrival of the settlers (more farming techniques, new traditions and cultures introduced to Alberta)
- finished Drylanders (ask me what the life of a settler was like)
- figured out what a treaty is (an agreement between two groups of people); we know why the First Nations peoples signed the treaty (buffalo numbers declining, settlers taking land, missionaries encouragement to sign, farming equipment)
Science
- started growing beans in a plastic bag to observe their life cycle

This week we:
- learned French numbers 20-60, ask me if there is a pattern
- learned ways to greet others in French, ask how others are doing, and respond when asked how we are doing
- reviewed ways to represent numbers (standard form, expanded form, base 10 blocks, words), we played 2 games with partners (Number Target and Battleship Place Value)
- practiced our managing and evaluating skills by extracting the most important information from a text and creating a pro/con list prior to writing our opinion (we started with a question about bison in Banff, next week we will talk about Calgary and the Olympics)
- applied our figurative language skills to begin writing our forgotten object poem

We are practicing managing and evaluating information in Social Studies. Yesterday, we read an article about bison in Banff National Park. Today, we made a pro/con list before we shared our own opinion. AMA the article we read and what my opinion is. Should the bison have been moved? (see our sentence starters below)

- learned how an item can be packaged in a variety of ways; we discovered that the items that had more packaging is made for the convienience of the consumer, while items with less packaging are environmentally friendly (see examples below; can I tell you the advantages and disadvantages for both items?

- about where different types of waste go: compost, recycling, garbage, and other (hazardous)
- how to tell time using the 24-hour clock and how to write calendar dates in different ways
- there are 6 regions in Alberta (ask me what regions Calgary and Edmonton are in)
-how to use commas
We also made a pie chart about our Waste Checkup. We wonder how our charts will change after we've finished Waste and Our World!
This week we learned:

This week we:
Learned how to count to dix in French (we are still practicing, it was a quick lesson as part of our introducition)!
Learned how to read an analogue clock. Help me practice!
We learned and reviewed parts of a textbook to help us gather information like: title, heading, table of contents, index, glossary, etc.
We practiced personification! The flower moaned as it fell to the ground. The sun wrapped its arms around the land in the morning.
Went on a waste walk and noticed all types of waste around our school.
Next week we will:
Practice telling time on the 24-hour clock and practice writing dates on the calendar in many different ways.

Week of September 4 - 7, 2018
Here are a few things we did and learned during our first week of grade four:
- We read Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith and created a journal page about math problems in our daily activities.
- We introduced our theme, "Then, Now, I Wonder?" by reading The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. We discussed what the Amazon rainforest looked, sounded, and felt like before the man came (then), after the man came and began to chop down the kapok tree (now), and wondered how the rainforest would look, sound and feel like if the man left the kapok tree alone or cut the tree down.
- We started Social Studies by looking at images of Alberta; we noticed how diverse the geography is Alberta is!
Next week, we will:
- Learn about Time in Math
- Start Waste in our World in Science
- Go on a community walk to see the mural by Hawkwood Hill

We discussed what the Amazon rainforest looked, sounded, and felt like before the man came (then), after the man came and began to chop down the kapok tree (now), and wondered how the rainforest would look, sound and feel like if the man left the kapok tree alone or cut the tree down.
- We started Social Studies by looking at images of Alberta; we noticed how diverse the geography is Alberta is!
Next week, we will:
- Learn about Time in Math
- Start Waste in our World in Science
- Go on a community walk to see the mural by Hawkwood Hill
